Comcast continues to open up DVR control

Qualified Comcast subscribers will soon be able to remotely control their digital video recorders--as long as they're part of the iPhone family of users--thanks to a new mobile app the MSO is releasing.

Comcast Mobile app 2.0 gives Comcast subscribers capabilities that FiOS and DirecTV subs are already enjoying: the ability to remotely program, schedule and cancel recordings on their DVRs. Comcast says that its remote DVR capability is first being made available to iPhone and iPod users but that it will be placed onto Research in Motion's (RIM's) BlackBerry devices "in the coming months."

Besides being Apple-centric, the new app has another drawback: it will only be available to subscribers with Comcast's new program guide. That's about 3.1 million households out of a universe of more than 20 million right now.
