CHICAGO--Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) has expanded its 4K service with a new set-top box that brings the conglomerate's growing 4K lineup to the X1 platform.
Comcast introduced a limited amount of 4K content in December with the introduction of an app that could be used on new Samsung 4K TVs.
The introduction of the Xi4 set-top, available later this year, expands the availability of Comcast's 4K VOD programming to customers with other 4K TVs. The MSO will also debut an HDR set-top, the Xi5, in 2016. Both boxes will be provided as free upgrades for existing Comcast subscribers.
In addition, the company said it's adding hundreds of titles, including series from Starz, Syfy and USA Network to its 4K VOD library.
Also added will be K2 Communications documentaries made for IMAX and Giant Screen Theaters.
"With Xfinity in UHD, our customers can easily and seamlessly enjoy some of the best 4K programming available today as part of their subscription with no additional equipment or costs," said Matt Strauss, executive VP and G.M. of video services for Comcast Cable."We are committed to providing the highest-quality entertainment experiences across platforms and our next-generation set-top boxes deliver on that promise--providing our customers with UHD and HDR programming on the biggest screen in the home."
