DENVER--Originally developed by a consortium of top cable operators just for set-top boxes, the Reference Design Kit (RDK) is now moving into the broadband realm.
Arris has announced that it is working with Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) to integrate the open-source software stack into cable modems. The technology company said it will conduct field trials with Comcast of the new Arris Touchstone TG1682 DOCSIS 3.0 voice gateway, integrated with RDK technology, in the fourth quarter, with the aim of general availability in the first quarter.
RDK was originally designed to provide a standard technological platform for the development of cable set-tops. The standard is now embraced by a global constituency of cable operators, chipmakers and various other technologies.
