Dish redesigns 'Anywhere' app: more image-based, Netflixier

Dish Network (NASDAQ: DISH) has announced a major upgrade to the tablet apps that fuel its Hopper with Sling service.

The sweeping new redesign to the Dish Anywhere app for Android, iPad and Kindle tablets includes significant interface changes, as well as new personalization features.

The interface, according to Dish, will now be thumbnail-based with a flat black background. 

As SVOD service Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) has done for several years, Dish Anywhere will now include recommendation features that suggest new shows to users based on programs they've previously watched. A "watchlist," meanwhile, will consolidate regularly viewed programs into an easily accessible queue, while the "media page" feature will highlight all the available platforms for specific programming.

There's also a feaure that turns the tablet into a virtual remote control.

"Dish Anywhere has been embraced by Dish customers as the premier platform for watching television shows while on the go," said Vivek Khemka, Dish senior VP of product management. "This is a powerful upgrade; the app's streamlined design creates a user-friendly experience while giving consumers a dynamic way to engage and discover new programs."
