Fox News' total audience down over 21% since Dish blackout started

Fox News' total audience performance has declined by 21.4 percent since its parent company removed it from 14 million Dish Network (NASDAQ: DISH) homes on Dec. 20, according to Nielsen ratings data pulled exclusively for FierceCable by the research department of a leading media agency.

According to the data, the leading cable news network averaged 970,000 viewers age 2 and older over a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week measurement from Dec. 20, 2013 to Jan. 7, 2014.

Using the same metric over the same span this year, Nielsen found that the 21st Century Fox-owned network averaged 762,000 viewers aged 2 and older.

Year-over-year, full day reports also found that Fox News has slipped 25 percent among its core demographic, adults 25-54.

Fox News executives dismissed earlier reports that measured a ratings drop over Christmas week, noting the volatility of viewing during that period. However, this larger span seems to indicate that the biggest carriage battle currently going on in the realm of pay-TV is having some appreciable impact on the programmer.

The cuts are going both ways, of course.

On Wednesday, Fox News executives released estimates--based on their own internal information gathering--that Dish has lost 90,000 subscribers since Fox News and Fox Business Channel were removed from its program guide.
