Marking one of the first major DOCSIS 3.1 deployments, Huawei said it's partnering with Tele Denmark Communications (TDC) to deploy DOCSIS 3.1-powered 1 Gbps service across TDC's coax network.
The companies will begin buildout this summer, targeting the end of 2017 for completion. Denmark will be the first country to upgrade an entire coax cable network to gigabit-level speeds.
"Huawei's cooperation with TDC and other industry players to build industry-leading Giga coax networks will greatly promote DOCSIS 3.1 commercialization worldwide and help establish a mature industry ecosystem," said Zha Jun, president of Huawei's fixed network product line, in a statement.
"It is the most ambitious and comprehensive upgrades we have ever made in our cable network and at the same time it is one of the largest investments in digital infrastructure we have seen in Denmark," added Pernille Erenbjerg, CEO of TDC. "We are opening a highway for digital entertainment media where only the imagination sets the limits and not the speed."
The network's DOCSIS 3.1 compliant architecture will involve network-wide end points, optical nodes, amplifiers, passive splitters and corresponding engineering services. The DOCSIS 3.1 standard allows one coaxial cable to provide a maximum bandwidth of 10 Gbps downstream and 2 Gbps upstream.
In the U.S., Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) is among several MSOs with aggressive plans for DOCSIS 3.1 rollout. The company said it wants to have the standard deployed across its footprint by 2018.
