Mavenir aims to exploit cable Wi-Fi craze with VoWi-Fi calling solution

With cable companies increasingly focused on developing products and services to monetize their fast-growing Wi-Fi networks, Mavenir Systems is introducing a voice-over-Wi-Fi calling solution targeted to MSOs.

Richardson, Texas-based Mavenir is primarily a vendor serving the wireless industry. Its new VoWi-Fi solution includes session control, application/messaging servers, access/border gateways, subscriber management/activation systems, and clients.

The solution is designed to integrate with operators' existing core networks. It can also be deployed as a greenfield network to offer voice, video and messaging applications using Wi-Fi access.

The company says it's currently in talks with multiple cable operators about using the solution.

In January, Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) introduced Freewheel, a low-cost data and voice service using the MSO's nearly 1.1 million Wi-Fi hotspots.

Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA), meanwhile, is currently developing several products to monetize its national network of nearly 8 million hotspots, although the conglomerate hasn't disclosed if VoWi-Fi will be part of any future offering.

"We believe that VoWifi changes the competitive landscape for cable operators," Pardeep Kohli, Mavenir's president and CEO, said in a statement.
