Motorola unveils an open platform for STBs

Some of the first fruits of its Kreatel acquisition are ripening: Motorola unveiled an open software solution for its VIP 1200 series set-top boxes in North America. The offering is called the KreaTV application platform and it makes use of the Linux OS to allow service providers and other third parties to customize and deploy applications via development kits. The company says that "interactive features such as programming guides, viewer voting tools, and advanced gaming can be seamlessly integrated by the service provider using the open-platform system in conjunction with third-party middleware and software providers." The offering will also allow service providers to launch multi-room DVR, VOD and interactive conferencing.
