The Reference Design Kit (RDK) now has support for Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), a popular pay-TV technology standard in Europe.
The announcement was made Monday by RDK Management, the joint venture led by Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Liberty Global. RDK is a pre-integrated software bundle that provides a common framework for powering set-tops, gateways and converged devices.
Specifically, in-band DVB Service Information (DVB-SI) elements are now available to the RDK community. DVB-SI provides RDK-based devices in-band table of contents and data required for electronic program guides and other services.
In-band DVB-SI provides a high degree of data reliability for operators of one-way networks.
RDK Management credited the development to Arris to contributions to the RDK Media Framework to support a common method for extracting DVB streams.
"Given the RDK's global reach and appeal, it was imperative to deliver DVB-SI functionality to support legacy networks," said Steve Heeb, president and general manager of RDK Management, LLC.
