Roku, one of the more increasingly important manufacturers and service providers in the pay-TV ecosystem, is getting ready to refresh its entire product line.
According to a list of vendor authorizations obtained by ZatsNotFunny, Roku is getting set to replace its traditionally numbered line of OTT devices with a new set of boxes monikered to sound like they were named by the broadband services department of an MSO.
For example, the base model Roku 1 will be replaced by the Roku Express and Express Plus, while the Roku 2 and Roku 3 will be replaced by the Premiere and Premiere Plus models. The Roku 4 will give way to the Roku Ultra.
It’s expected that the Premiere and Plus models will both include 4K capabilities, with Plus also including HDR functionality.
According to blogger David Zatz, the Roku Ultra — the company’s most robust model — will add a remote control finder and optical out.
Roku hasn’t announced a timeline for the product launches, but it’s expect that they’ll all ship in time for the holiday shopping season.
Roku has recently announced a range of deals to collaborate with pay-TV operators. Notably, it’s part of Comcast’s “partners program,” which aims to replace set-top boxes with multi-screen apps.
