Even as the cable industry gathers around for a self-congratulatory look-at-me show in Chicago this week, an insidious outsider, sonic.net, is stirring the business model waters.
The independent ISP will be launching a 1 Gbps fiber service to about 700 homes in Sebastopol, Calif. for $69.95 a month. If the business model works--and cable prices have indicated it might not--the ISP will think about moving to other areas of the country.
"Honestly, only as those (trials) wrap up will we have a complete picture of the economic model, but I believe that fast service for a low cost is possible," Dane Jasper, CEO of sonic.net said.
