KlowdTV, a millennial-targeted, low-cost streamer of small channel bundles, has announced the addition of a cloud DVR to its service.
The tiered service lets users pay an additional $1 a month for three hours of virtual DVR storage, topping out with 60 hours of storage for $20 a month.
The startup has programming rights to use its DVR on the "vast majority" of its 58 channels, says Bill O'Hara, co-founder of the IP-based programming service.
O'Hara would not disclose how many subscribers KlowdTV has gathered so far. "We did have significant traction in the last several months of 2015," he said. "We really do have the most viable model to capture a demographic that networks are struggling to get -- those who aren't singing up for cable as they come out of college, or those who are getting rid of cable."
Amid a flurry of over-the-top alternatives, O'Hara said Klowd TV's selection of primarily independent and Spanish-language channels is catching on because of the company's pricing model. Users pay $5 for one genre-themed channel package and can add on "micro-packages" of channels themed around sports, news, entertainment and various Spanish language themes for an additional $3 a pop.
The service is streamable on iOS and Android mobile devices, as well as OTT devices including Roku and Amazon Fire TV.
"Our differentiator for us is price -- the notion that you can get the live feed of the same linear feed if you were watching on Comcast or Dish Network," O'Hara added.
Based in Fairfax, Va., KlowdTV raised $635,000 in debt and funding equity in September.
