YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said her Google (NASDAQ: GOOG)-owned video platform may soon launch a subscription-based service
Wojcicki |
Speaking at Re/code's Code/Mobile conference in Half Moon Bay, Calif. Monday--an event covered by FierceWireless editor Phil Goldstein--Wojcicki said launch of the service is "near term," while also noting, "There are going to be cases where people say, 'I don't want to see the ads."
The veteran YouTube executive stopped short, however, of offering any clarity in terms of timeline, or what a subscription-based YouTube service might look like.
"I think it's a really interesting model," she noted. Huh.
Wojcicki did give some insight into YouTube's growing mobile profile--she said about 50 percent of the platform's viewership now comes through tablets and smart phones, up from an earlier-reported figure of 40 percent.
"Mobile is super important," she said. "I think it's important for every business right now."
