Apple has officially unveiled a new 4K/HDR compatible version of its Apple TV streaming box, featuring both HDR10 and Dolby Vision support.
20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Universal, Paramount, Sony Pictures and Warner have signed on to upgrade their films to 4K resolution across iTunes. Apple will provide automatic upgrades to 4K versions of films at no additional charge for customers who already purchased HD versions, since 4K films on iTunes will cost the same amount as HD.
The new Apple TV is run by the A10X Fusion chip, features 3GB of RAM, and will be able to handle 4K content at up to 60 frames per second.
The device goes on sale Sept. 15 and will begin shipping one week later.

Apple’s official launch today of an Apple TV that supports 4K and HDR comes after several months of hints popping up that alluded to Apple’s plans. Last month, BGR spotted a tweet from iOS developer Guilherme Rambo that points out new bits of data that name drop J105A, Apple’s apparent internal code for the upcoming 4K-enabled Apple TV, in the seventh tvOS beta.
With 4K finally being baked into the Apple TV, Apple has caught up with competitors like Amazon, Google and Roku, which already do or soon will offer 4K-enabled streaming devices.
Apple has also updated its TV app, which now incorporates live TV shows, sports and news. That update also seemingly coincides with reports from last month.
According to Bloomberg, the TV app will be upgraded to include apps that offer livestreaming. Apple launched its TV app in 2016, but at the time it didn’t include Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, two of the most popular streaming services. Apple has since settled its differences with Amazon and announced support for its streaming service.
