ExtendMedia powers Polish web portal's OTT on-demand VOD launch

Online video content management firm ExtendMedia has deployed its OpenCASE platform with Poland's largest web portal, Onet.pl, to power OnetVOD, an over-the-top video-on-demand service launching today.

OnetVOD offers free, ad supported and pay-to-view movies, TV series and programs to Polish Internet users, and launches with a modest 2,100 titles produced within Onet.pl's parent company, TVN Group, as well as from Hollywood studios and other media distributors.

"Onet.pl has a singular growth objective of becoming the largest commercial VOD provider in Poland and to achieve this goal we must deliver great content and flexible payment options," said Lukasz Wejchert, CEO of Onet.pl Group.  "To that end, we required an efficient and versatile digital video platform for managing, publishing and monetizing video across PCs, televisions and mobile devices. ... ExtendMedia's OpenCASE platform is the best solution to build and deploy OnetVOD based on its support for multiple media business models and proven implementations with leading telcos, cable operators and media companies around the world."

Newton, Mass.-based ExtendMedia last year was chosen to support Bell Canada's TV Everywhere deployment, one of the first in Canada. It also powers initiatives for media and consumer electronics companies including AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi/UB Cross, SanDisk and Thales. It's OpenCASE solution is platform agnostic and includes out-of-the-box integration with ad servers, CDNs, DRM providers and encoding platforms. It supports both paid and ad-supported business models, and can deliver streamed or downloaded content to multiple devices.

ExtendMedia says it OpenCASE platform was purpose-built to meet the needs of content creators and distributors seeking to build, deploy and manage unified video services across PC, TV and mobile devices.

"For ExtendMedia, the Onet.pl deployment is continued validation of the full capabilities of the OpenCASE platform and it reflects our continued expansion across Europe," said Tom MacIsaac, CEO of ExtendMedia.

Over-the-top deployments are expected to increase rapidly over the next several years with the market expected to be worth more than $5.8 billion by 2014, said The Diffusion Group's Michael Greeson.
