Qriocity VOD service debuts in Canada

Qriocity, Sony's (NYSE: SNE) fledgling media service designed to compete with Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iTunes and other online content sources has launched in Canada. The service allows users to browse and rent online movies on demand, as well as other media like ebooks, music, game applications and videos.

"Video on Demand powered by Qriocity" is available on 2010 and 2011 Sony connected Bravia TVs and devices. Users have access to content from companies like NBC Universal Television Distribution, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, The Walt Disney Studios, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. The service will also include films from local studios.

HD films cost from $5-$6 with standard definition movies available for $4-$5. Content will be available in English and in French.

Qriocity launched in Japan late in January and already is available in the U.S., France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K.
