Walmart's movie service, Vudu, is opening up a digital locker for customers that allows them to download movies and television episodes they buy for devices and watch them later, without an Internet connection.

The Vudu service, which increasingly is seen as competing with Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) and Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), has some 40,000 titles that start at $4.99 for movies and $1.99 for TV episodes. The Vudu-to-Go service makes SD-quality downloads of purchased content available at no extra charge.
Consumers who purchase a variety of Blu-ray Discs or DVDs including When Harry Met Sally (through Nov. 30), Scream 4, and Stake Land will also receive a digital copy of the movie.
Unlike UltraViolet, which is slowly being rolled out by movie studios, Vudu-to-Go currently doesn't allow downloads to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. PlayStation 3 owners currently can download Vudu rentals and purchases onto the hard drive included with the game console.
