Streaming industry Q&A:
Love Nature is a destination for wildlife and nature content. The compelling animal stories and connection to the natural world have been drawing audiences to Love Nature since the channel made its U.S. debut in 2020. At a time when FAST was just an emerging buzzword in the television industry, the move was a considerable risk for the natural history brand, which was largely unknown in the U.S. market. Love Nature’s offering of pure wildlife and nature programming has resonated with an under-served niche audience in the U.S. marketplace with premium series and documentaries that rival speciality Pay-TV channels, but are available to engaged audiences for free. Fast-forward to current day, Love Nature is now available on more than a dozen of the top free streaming services in the U.S., including The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, VIZIO WatchFree+, Xumo, Tubi, LG, FreeVee, Pluto (branded block)
Have there been any surprising trends or patterns in user viewing habits that you've observed on your platform?
Love Nature’s monthly programming stunts have been very popular on the channel. These highly engaging events, that are packaged with curated programming and themed visual branding consistently draw in audiences. Great examples include April’s “Love Earth” event, honoring Earth Month, “Colossal Cat” Week in September and “Fin Fest” in November. The programming events are an extension of Love Nature’s attention to customizing and packaging the channel to make it attractive to audiences and make it easy for streaming partners to market and promote the channel on their platform. The curated line-ups showcase programming that viewers can’t find anywhere else with original series and documentaries produced by some of the biggest names in the natural history space.
Can you share an interesting fact about the most-watched movie or TV show on your FAST platform?
Becoming Orangutan is a Love Nature original fan favorite and was the channel’s most popular series during its Earth Month programming event in April. The series gives an intimate look inside the world’s largest orangutan rehabilitation center in Borneo, where adorable orphaned apes are nurtured by specially trained caregivers at the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF). Viewers get an in-depth look at how friendship and interspecies bonds can be the difference between success and failure. The BOSF established the orangutan jungle school in response to young orangutans becoming displaced due to illegal pet trade and their rainforest habitats being destroyed. With the population of orangutans dwindling every single day, Love Nature has joined forces with the BOSF to play an active role in orangutan conservation.
Can you share a fun fact about the process of selecting and curating programming for your FAST platform?
As a FAST channel, Love Nature’s programming strategy is already leading the way toward global premieres. Love Nature commissions hundreds of hours of original premium natural history content that the programming team windows for both the U.S. FAST platform and the brand’s globally distributed Pay-TV channels. In January 2023, Love Nature original series, Wildlife ER, launched simultaneously on global PayTV channels AND Love Nature’s FAST channels in the U.S, delivering on a brand promise to begin premiering tentpole original productions on its free streaming platforms.
Wildlife ER is a heartwarming series that follows the dedicated professionals and volunteers on the front lines of rescuing and caring for sick and injured wild animals in Australia’s busiest wildlife hospital. The team performs life-saving treatment on animals like koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, lizards and possums and nurses them back to good health and until they’re strong enough to return to the wild.
