Apple TV app launches on Amazon Fire TV devices

Apple is advancing its third-party device distribution plans ahead of Apple TV+’s Nov. 1 launch by arriving on some Amazon Fire TV devices starting today.

Amazon said the Apple TV app is available today for Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen) and Fire TV Stick 4K in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and India. Fire TV Basic Edition customers in more than 50 countries including Australia, Austria, New Zealand, Brazil, Ireland and Mexico will also be able to start using the app today.

The company said the app will be coming soon to Fire TV Cube (1st and 2nd Gen), Fire TV (3rd Gen pendant design), Fire TV Edition smart TVs and Nebula sound bar.

The Apple TV app on Fire TV devices will give users access to their iTunes libraries along with the Apple TV+ streaming service. To buy or rent something from iTunes, Fire TV users will need to do so on their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC. Afterward it will appear within the Apple TV app on Fire TV.

As expected, the Amazon launch for Apple TV comes along shortly after Apple’s launch on Roku devices. Amazon and Roku account for a large percentage of the connected TV devices and smart TVs being used in the U.S. and internationally, so Apple’s partnerships with the companies are key to boosting availability of Apple TV+.

According to TDG’s most recent “Benchmarking the Connected Consumer 2019” research, just more than 30% of adult broadband users have a streaming box, and 38% have a streaming stick. The data shows that Roku has approximately 51% share of the streaming box market in the U.S., the company has only about 30% of the market for streaming sticks. Fire TV, on the other hand, only has 28.5% share of the U.S. streaming box market but nearly 57% of the streaming stick share of U.S. households.
