SiriusXM app lands on Vizio smart TVs

Premium audio provider SiriusXM has made its streaming radio app available to users of Vizio's SmartCast-enabled smart TV sets, the company announced on Thursday.

The SXM app makes over 400 streaming radio channels and hundreds of hours of on-demand content available to SiriusXM radio subscribers, along with more than 13,000 video clips from select  programs and events, including "The Howard Stern Show."

"For millions of consumers, Vizio smart TVs are the entertainment centers of their homes, and we are pleased to now provide customers with the SXM app and access to our full lineup of content," Joe Verbrugge, the chief commercial officer of SiriusXM, said in a statement. "Vizio's products deliver an outstanding user experience and are an excellent platform for experiencing the great programming that our subscribers love. Whether it's music, podcasts, sports, entertainment programming or all of the above, the SXM App on Vizio Smart TVs brings everyone’s favorite content into the home."

Along with the streaming radio content, the SXM app was recently updated to include access to SXM and third-party produced podcasts. Shows available to subscribers through the SXM app include "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend," produced by SiriusXM brands Earwolf and Team Coco, along with "99% Invisible," Tom Brady's "Let's Go!" and "Crime Junkie," to name a few.

SiriusXM Premiere and Premiere Streaming customers also have access to on-demand music streams powered by Pandora technology. The Personalized Stations Powered by Pandora feature allows users to start a station based on an artist or band, and then personalize the feeds by rating individual tracks with a thumbs up or a thumbs down, similar to user interactions in the Pandora app itself.

"Vizio users can now access their favorite on-the-go programs directly on the biggest screen in their homes," Katherine Pond, the group vice president of platform and content partnerships at Vizio, said in a statement. "“From podcasts to music, we are happy to bring SiriusXM’s audio and video entertainment to millions of VIZIO users across the U.S."

Putting the SXM app on Vizio TVs puts the service in front of nearly 17 million monthly active users of Vizio's SmartCast platform, according to the hardware maker's latest earnings report. Like other streaming TV hardware makers, Vizio's business model has shifted over the last few years to focus more on services, which has become a bigger part of its revenue.

It also helps grow SiriusXM's customer base, which grew to just under 34.2 million subscribers as of its fourth business quarter of 2022. SiriusXM charges between $5 and $11 a month plus taxes and fees for access to its streaming radio service, and slightly more if customers use a SiriusXM-branded hardware radio or tuner.
